Vinyl Cut Of The Day - Wah! Heat....

Before Teardrop Explodes, Before The Bunnymen, came The Crucial Three with Julian Cope, Ian McCulloch and Pete Wylie. Pete Wylie formed Wah! Heat and this was the debut single from March 1980. The album Wah! Nah Poo The Art of Bluff was also amazing.

This was before The Story of The Blues and all that jazz.

Steven Wells

Steven Wells 1960 - 2009
There isn't really much that's been said that hasn't been said already today but i will for one miss 'Swells' and his to the punch, incredibly funny writing. As a kid on of my highlights on a Wednesday morning was to pick up the NME to read his column or read which record he'd give either 0/10 or 10/10 to. There are very little writers of his class and had the balls to do what he did nowadays. Steven Wells, gone but never forgotten.

Vinyl Cut Of The Day - Aztec Camera

Mattress Of Wire the band's second single from 1981. Roddy Frame was barely out of school. Postcard was a record label releasing glorious seven inch singles by Orange Juice and Josef K and the first three Aztec Camera singles had a homely warmth to them which has stood the test of time. This was Postcard 81:8. A well respected journalist and author once tried to steal this copy but was apprehended.

Vinyl Cut Of The Day - Scritti Politti

To celebrate the 54th birthday of Green Gartside today's vinyl cut of the day comes from Scritti Politti. The Word Girl was the opening track from the band's hugely successful 1985 album 'Cupid & Psyche 85.' On a more personal note the single charted on the day I was born.

Other Lives

God Damn I love those guys at Daytrotter. They've just posted a wonderful session from a band who were one of my highlights at SXSW in March. Other Lives, a 5 piece, from Stillwater, Oklahoma, released their self titled debut in the US through TBD Records (home to Radiohead in America) earlier this year and it's one of the most beatifully crafted records i've heard in a good long time. Jesse Tabish (piano, guitar, lead vocals), Josh Onstott (bass, organ, Backing vocals), Jenny Hsu (cello, piano, Backing Vocals), Colby Owens (drums), Jonathon Mooney (piano, violin, guitar) are currently in the middle of tour around the US. Hopefully they'll be over in the UK pretty soon. Check them out!

Isle Of Wight

So this is what we call a pointless post. This weekend The Pigeon Detectives went off to play Isle Of Wight, which i was very very excited about as they were playing with Pixies and one of my heroes, Neil Young. Unfortuntately i couldn't go in the end but here is his set list and footage of Cinnamon Girl from 1978.

Das Racist

Right its Friday its sunny and i've been listening to this band all day (and all last month). Das Racist 2 guys from Brooklyn, New York. I love them. A mix up minimalist beats, old school hip hop and piss funny lyrics.

Anyway Perez Hilton likes them (check this out), this is a little taster of the band. Watch out you'll be hearing a lot more from Himanshu and Victor very VERY soon. Go to the myspace and check out the original version of Combination Pizza Hut & Taco Bell and Rainbow In The Dark.

Nacional

Confession time. This blog should have been posted a week ago in time for Nacional's gig at the Faversham. Unfortuately as the DTTR cripple i've been stricken down with a number of problems but i'm back on the blog!

If you can spare a few moments I urge you to check out Nacional's videos below. They are a great band who have 2 singles out on a fellow Leeds label art/goes/pop. Anyway if you like what you see / hear check out the band's myspace and get one of their 7" vinyls.

Friday Treat - Les Fleurs by Minnie Ripperton

An all time favourite this, just the ticket for some end of week fun.
Originally from the 1970 album Come to my Garden, this is surely one of the most blissful tunes ever.

Ambient Corner Number 1

Ambient Corner will be bringing you some soundscape choices from Mick and from Simon in New York. We are going to lower you in with a bit of Fripp and Eno. More in depth later, for now now here's the surface layer. This is from Evening Star (1975) and you can hear the influence in the likes of Robin Guthrie's first post Cocteau Twins album "Imperial" released on Bella Union in 2003.

New Book

Acquired a new book yesterday which I’m looking forward to having a proper delve into. Take a look at the cover pics, you’ll pretty much get the idea. I’ll let you know if it’s any good at a later date.

Out Of The Woods And Trees / Sky Larkin / Mother Vulpine

Everytime we get a new compilation ready i always like to have a listen over the previous ones that we've put out (by the way DTTR 4x12" Volume 2 is done and will be announced very soon). I spent last night listening to the last CD comp we put out 'Out Of The Woods And Trees' i've always held this one pretty close to the heart. Call me a massive geek but i absolutely loved being involved in putting that one together and spending bloody ages sequencing it so it sounded seamless even though all 20 tracks came in at over the maximum length for a cd so myself and Andy, the chap who mastered the comp, had to make some interesting changes. Namely turning the Vessels and Held By Hands tunes into a continuous flow of music. Anyway this is getting off the point.

When i go down the list of names on the comp it does make me feel rather proud. Bobby Cook is currently in the middle of recording his debut album with his new (same) band Goldhawks, Prego are starting to make a real name for themselves, Mother Vulpine unfortunately split but into 2 rather well known and awesome bands 'Pulled Apart By Horses' and 'Dinosaur Pile-Up', Sky Larkin have gone onto wonderful things and it's always a joy to catch up for a rare shandy with them, The Chapman Family have gone onto play the NME Radar tour and Vessels have continued to show why they're one of Leeds' best bands.

So we're gonna give away a couple of tracks from the compilation for you guys to have a listen to. Also iTunes are now selling the full compilation for only £2.49 (yes thats cheap) and if you're a pacient soul then you can buy the CD direct from us for £2 (yes that's even cheaper)

Purchase From iTunes for £2.49

Purchase From the lovely folks at Dance To The Radio £2 (plus the postman fee)

Watch out for other little treats from old DTTR compilations.
